Indian rivers are broadly classified as Himalayan and Peninsular based on origin.

  • Himalayan rivers — perennial, snow/glacier-fed (e.g. Ganga, Brahmaputra).
  • Peninsular rivers — seasonal, rain-fed, flow over older rock (e.g. Godavari, Krishna).
