What is Public Interest Litigation (PIL)?
Public Interest Litigation (PIL):
- Concept: Legal action initiated in court for the enforcement of public interest or general welfare where public rights are affected.
- Locus Standi Relaxation: Any public-spirited individual or organization can approach Supreme Court (Art 32) or High Court (Art 226) on behalf of underprivileged groups.
- Pioneers in India: Introduced in 1980s by Justice P.N. Bhagwati and Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer.
