What is Surface Tension and capillary action?

20193M#Mains2019#quick-fact#mppsc-mains-en

Surface Tension & Capillary Action:

  • Surface Tension (T): Property of liquid surface at rest to behave like a stretched elastic membrane due to cohesive forces (T = F/L, N/m).
  • Capillary Action: Spontaneous rise or fall of liquid in a narrow tube (capillary) due to balance of cohesive and adhesive forces.
  • Examples: Spherical raindrops, oil rising in lamp wick, absorption of ink by blotting paper.
