Bauxite is the principal ore used in the production of aluminum. India possesses rich deposits of bauxite, primarily concentrated in the peninsular plateau region, coastal tracts, and laterite belts associated with hill ranges.

1. Odisha (Largest Producer & Reserve Holder)
  • Accounts for over 50% of India's total bauxite production and reserves.
  • Key Belts: The East Coast Bauxite Belt spanning the Eastern Ghats.
  • Major Districts: Kalahandi, Koraput, Sundargarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur. Panchpatmali in Koraput is the largest single deposit.
2. Gujarat
  • Second largest producing state (~15-20% of national output).
  • Major Districts: Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Amreli, and Kutch along the coastal belt.
3. Chhattisgarh
  • Rich reserves associated with the Maikal hill range and Amarkantak plateau.
  • Major Districts: Surguja, Korba, Bilaspur, Kabirdham, and Raigarh.
4. Jharkhand
  • Found in the high-altitude laterite plateaus (Pats region).
  • Major Districts: Lohardaga, Ranchi, Gumla, and Palamu. Lohardaga is a major bauxite mining hub.
5. Maharashtra & Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra: Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, Thane, and Satara districts.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Katni, Balaghat, Mandla, Shahdol, and Jabalpur districts.

Conclusion: India is self-sufficient in bauxite reserves, with Odisha forming the backbone of the domestic aluminum smelting industry (NALCO, Hindalco).
